Who is to Blaim.
All through the history of gambling there has been a saying first reported to have been made after a famous match bet between two Lords, when there individual servants and friends were invited to partisipate in the gambling taking place.
One old, sage, who had been in the service. of one Lord passed comment, that he would never bet on anything that talked.
When he was reprimanded with a terse.”Horses Dont Talk do they?”
In a whisper that he hoped would not be wasn’t heard by his master, he commented.
“No but Jockeys DO.”
250 years later let us discuss the whisper and how accurate is the comment.
Horses them selves in fact are born to RUN and so are Greyhounds.
Once a racehorse is prompted to run comming out of the stalls or in the case of National Hunt, the tape. he will in the majority of cases RUN like the wind.
However both animal species, Horses and Greyhounds do have an optimum distance, that they excel.
Take Humans for instance, a fit young, professional runner can run like the wind, however, two individuals. both fit as flea,s and the same age, can of course run very accurately to there best time every time that they run. in fact if both are trying to do so. the distance between themselves at the finish will be amazingly accurate. however the distance of the race will dictate the result.
Even Johnson. the unbeatable 200/400 meter Champion would never win a race at 800 metres, and that is why he never entered such races.
Coe and Ovitt would be beaton by School Boy champions at 100 metres, or at 10,000 metres.
A further point that requires discussion is how the running takes place, of course during there period, the two runners, previously discussed Ovitt and Coe, were World Champions at the two events of 800 and 1500 meters,
In the Los Angeles Olympics the two geniuses,s met head to head.
Coe appeared to be unbeatable at the shorter distance but no human could counter the Ovitt kick, at the Blue Ribbond distance of “a Mile”
So what went wrong how could Ovitt dominate Coe in the 800 metres and be dominated himself in the 1500.
It was a case of mind over matter either one, doing something that wasn’t expected of them, and both taking themselves past the barriers. shocking ans surprising there opponent in each of there best race.reversing what seemed a certain outcome.
Now we move back to the Horse.
No horse can run flat out much further than the minimum sprint distance of 5 furlongs, and if they attempted to do so at further distances they would just blow up. and stop to a walk. like marathon runners, it is the pace that dictates.
No here enters the only person who can, do what is required to get the very best out of the Horses and that is the JOCKEY.
And it is here that the Jockey can make the horse look a champion or a Chump. and it is also when a Jockey can dictate how well or badly the horse will run.
In the 1980 there was a rumor within the sport. of a Jockey Ring, this conspiracy, made for its members, small fortunes, at no time were they detected. so it has always been hearsay,
Over quite a long period I had the duty to get money on certain horses it was after a period that I came to the conclusion that something was not quite right, about tye running and riding of these races.
Every race dominated by 4 well known riders, you could see that it was the way, that the races were run, that dictated the outcome, most of the time.
Horses that were at there very best in a race dominated by the pace, would get exactly what they wanted other times, horses that were at there best with a crawl. would be allowed the privilege, at no time could any steward, object, to the way that a race was run, as that is not always predictable.
Two things therefore predict what the result will be, and is something that can not be guaranteed before the race commences, it is The Pace.
So that was the point raised by the LORDS Butler, in 1785. and is true to today. never bet on anything that talks.
The other great animal that creates millions of pounds a year for the government and Bookmaking Industry is the Hound,
Greyhounds like horses are just let go and they run, of course in there case they are doing what is natural. they are chasing food, or something that looks like it. a s if there life depends on it.
Like Humans yet again although they run flat out, like the wind, when coursing a hare, they do use a very highly tuned brain, if there are other greyhounds after the same hare.
In fact the scoring on a coursing match, like those seen at The Waterloo Cup. clearly see dogs manouvering the hare away from there opponent, for this they receive points. it is this skill that creats Champions.
In the case of Greyhound Racing, arround a track, it is the grader that dictates the fairness, of a race, so that although one greyhound may clearly be the fastest, over the race distance. the 4 bends, will dictate the outcome, and even more so will be the Trap Draw, I will not say that graders of greyhound events grade the races to cause injury, to some of the greyhounds, but it is a fact that most of the collisions at the first two bends can be easily predicted.
Perhaps the racing industry, believe that first bend collisions are part of the excitement, I would hate for that to be the case. but I am not convinced. as this causes hundreds of early deaths in th sport.
Once again. although you are betting on something that cannot talk, those that can, place certain barriers that will affect the result.
How easy is it to hinder a greyhound in his ability to run flat out.
Well if a greyhound runs flat out thinking that he is chasing a meal. what will happen if the dog is fully fed not long before the race,
I don’t know but in my case I would never be so sprightly entering a restraint, if I had already had a Big Mack.
So the moral of the story is don’t ever bet on anything were the participant Talks, but in the case of Greyhounds, we will replace Talking with Barking.
Cubone.
